Traditions from Around the World:

Birthday Celebrations from Russia

In Russia children who's birthday it is receive a present at school. Teachers often give a gift to their students whose birthday it is such as flowers, pencils or books to celebrate their birthday. Other children in the class might give small handmade gifts as well.

They have a birthday party either on their birthday or on the weekend. They might be served a birthday cake or a pie with the birthday greeting pricked onto the crust. The first piece of birthday cake or pie is given to the birthday child not to the guests.

Children play a game that features a clothesline. What they do is prizes are hung from it and each guest cuts down a prize to take home.

Russian is the official language of Russia.

If you're Russian, you may receive a birthday pie with a birthday greeting carved into the crust, instead of a cake!
